The Freaky Weeky Awards!

Hosts Todd Sullivan and Alice Gillette are here to tell us what was good and what was awful because hierarchy and winning are the only reasons we do this, right?

Actually, they found 87 golden trophies at the Goodwill Bins and they refuse to lug their blue IKEA bag back onto the RTD. To save them the trip, they’re giving them all away tonight.

They’re even crowning one lucky audience member for the Best Review (so get yours in via the Google Form).

Come help them empty the bag.

Featuring live performances from:

  • Tiff

  • Jared

  • Villy & Aardvark

  • Patrick

  • Camera Man

  • Camera Baby

  • …and one of the Denver Nuggets?!??

TL;DR: it’s like…

  • …THE ONLY AWARDS SHOW THAT MATTERS.

Reviews on the hosts:

“THIS FEELS LIKE A TRICK OR A TRAP BECAUSE HOW DO WE LEAVE A REVIEW OF A SHOW THAT HAPPENS WHEN REVIEWS ARE BEING READ.”

-V.

“I can confidently say the hosts are not doing a good job right now!”

-Mike

“The hosts are literally reading off of an iPad like iPad babies. This is nuts. Thank god there are bits in this show from actual perfomers!”

-Sara M.

“With a gun to their heads, Alice and Todd would still probably continue to give us 1/10 energy as hosts. LOL Alice and Todd do and don’t look like they’re having a good time (as hosts) … is it a bit? Also, they’re still charming? What’s going on? BUTTTT they are definitely having a great time watching everyone when they don’t have to host.”

-Anonymous

“Can I just say: seeing Alice Gillette walk and talk exactly like Meat Show (but in her normal clothes without any of the costume or makeup) is deeply disturbing. It’s the theatrical equivalent of finding out your parents are Santa.”

-Anonymous

Reviews on the bits:

“I love Yama and how Yama floats.”

-Adam P. re: Yama

“Yama has starpower.”

-Alice G. re: Yama

“Morph suit guy got no love but he killed.”

-Anonymous re: Yama

“Jared’s commitment to the choreography and the inherent awkwardness of the piece is FUN and VERY DUMB! (compliment!!) It’s a fearless performance that relies on a rare, specific kind of charm to bridge the gap between the audience and the absurd. Jared’s one of my favorite clowns to watch.

-Alice G. re: Jared

That dancing guy in the sick ass hat has a stage presence that draws you in by giving everything while simultaneously giving nothing at all.”

-Anonymous re: Jared

“This has the energy of a DIY David Lynch-inspired SNL bit. It’s a high-concept performance with an incredible payoff, where the sight of an adult man playing a baby is exactly the right kind of disturbing. “

-Lauren M. re: Cameraman

The world-building here relied entirely on cardboard and baby monitors. This impressed me. I love seeing these artists do so much with very few props. Eerie as fuck. Cool as shit. Knowing this is being developed into an hour-long show for the Denver Fringe Festival this year has me excited and scared.”

-Anonymous re: Cameraman

“Cameraman is kind of hot.”

-Christina B. re: Cameraman

“Villy and Aardvark is an incredible use of costumes, prosthetics, and props that evokes the world of Broadway’s CATS but with a much cooler and edgier sensiblity, as if it was played by the cast of HBO’s Search Party.”

-Alice G. re: Villy and Aardvark

“Sharp pacing that moves through a series of weird games and asides that are as funny as they are surprisingly sweet. A highly specific, well-executed bit of character work. I definitely need to see this dog and aardvark (?) again.”

-Anonymous re: Villy and Aardvark

Mike and Megan deliver so hard with their short play. It’s a twisted, noir fever dream with acrobatic choreography and immersive (and kind of bad, but very funny) mime work. There are so many windows.”

-Anonymous re: The Big Deceit

“An incredible sense of physicality. The choreography by Megan is a highlight, for sure. At one point, she jumps acrobatically onto Mike to light a cigarette like a human Rube Goldberg machine.”

-Anonymous re: The Big Deceit

Mike’s deadpan delivery kills me. Really into the overall twisted, sexy energy of the bit. Even though it was performed in color, I was so immersed and locked in that I found myself watching it in black and white in my head.”

“Thank you for the poem. I teared up. ”

-Sameer V.

“Don’t fuck with Daisy. She has the power of God and anime on her side. Seriously, I saw this being workshopped at a Clown Jam and I wasn’t expecting it to go the places it did. 10/10.”

-Andrew C.

“Omg what a amazing scary psycho bitch. That was some serious workout. Gotta work out Myself just watching the show. Had to add 5000 steps to my steps app just for watching. Loved the pirate being abducted by the aliens. Solei you are amazing. You rock.”

-Baz

“I liked the mouth stuff. And I liked the wailing coach.”

-Nib

“This is such a fun concept, and I can’t wait to see how it develops. The club sequence is so high energy, and combined with the audience occasionally shouting at you to drink water, it makes me wonder if a bit/game you can do is literally ask the audience, “Should I drink water?” And have them pick yes or no. Especially since one of the prompts at the top of the show was to make sure Daisy drinks water.

I’m excited to see what the least bit was, with the audience cue cards “Oohhhh”, “nooooo”,“applause”, “laugh”, etc. It felt like it could be a sitcom-style world! And I apologize if I missed what that bit was about.

The ending with Daisy being a higher power/god/demon entity is brilliant! MOAR of that please, even more bigger and terrifying. It was a beautiful twist.”

“It’s actually a beautiful story. It had fun music, cool animations, and clever use of video characters interacting with characters on stage. Awesome show.”

-Corey G.

“Pure. Unbridled. New Jersey. Chaos. A co-dependent love story for the ages, spanning across different mediums. It’s everything I ever dreamed of in a mafia opera.”

-V.

“Great Show. Paula has the voice of an angel.”

-Mom

“Bee A U Te Full. Long live the Queens. It is funnier every time I see it. Masterpiece of singing and dancing. Broadway has a new home and it lives in the hearts of Paula and Toni Smoocholi.”

-O.

“Smoocholi Nights is a triumph of absolute commitment. Gabbie Perez and Tatianna Gerlits immerse themselves so deeply in their roles that the audience fully buys into every moment of the absurdity. It’s like if Tony and Carmela Soprano took couples counseling at The Groundlings.

It’s impressive to see a stage production so unashamedly handmade (with plastic toy guns, popsicle sticks and a blow up doll) yet somehow achieving a truly cinematic feel. This is strange, brilliant theater that everyone in Denver (and beyond) needs to experience.”

Reviews

“One of the most absurd premises for a clown show I’ve seen in recent memory. Melo’s performance starts out goofy before shifting into something that feels surprisingly like a life story told through a surreal lens. The technical elements, from the puppetry and special effects to the multimedia, are handled with a fearless hand (and sometimes crab claw) all while being anchored by a costume that is as delightfully simple as it is effective. Melo’s crowd work is exceptionally high-level. Melo keeps the audience locked into a world that is equal parts ridiculous and heartfelt. Crabman needs to host the Emmys.”

-Alice G.

“Crabman is a poignant but hilarious examination of the unhealthy relationship between wanting fame and what you'll do to get it. Also, a man shoves a crab up his ass. 11/10. Please do not give me the reviewer award, I post this review solely for the joy of it.”

-PB

“Federico will be remembered. May his molt be magnificent.”

-Sameer

“Crabman brings the cartoon of influencer culture to life. Wait, nah nah.. actually, I think the thing is it's he does that thing.. from that era of movies from Dick Tracy and shit. He puts those shoulder pads in and it's incredible. It's in that kinda immersive fashion that's stylized like a cartoon. It's impressive. And his crowd work is on point. He doesn't really faulter when he's in with the crowd, you know what I mean? He's automatic. I think Crabman is my favorite thing I've seen so far. A very confident 5 (out of 5 stars).”

-BM

“I had originally thought that Crabman shoved a different crab up his ass every single day, like, 999 different crabs have been up his ass. I did not think that the crabs would have survived. Now that I know it's one crab, I find myself wanting to see more of the relationship between Crabman and the crab. Was this originally a mutual consensual agreement? What was the crab's life like before this? Were they a fellow colleague at the Best Buy Geek Squad and they, too, yearned for something more? Watching Crabman go THROUGH it realizing that the journey was over - now what? was so great because he wanted to savor every last second before it was all over. That felt real. That was the more realistic interpretation of stalling because you didn't want it to end I have ever seen on stage!”

-V

“This show was incredibly unique and creative and avant- garde in the best ways. Crabman’s clear need for love and validation through the lens of media and influencers today was really cool and meta in many ways. What a fun and special piece of art!”

-Jane C.

I’m really glad he shoved the crab up his ass twice.”

Reviews

“Both clowns are fully committed here, and the odd, DIY aesthetic of the costumes and makeup is a standout feature. While the narrative is easy to follow throughout, the ending felt unearned, with a turn toward messiness that undermines the focus and hard work established in the earlier sections. I left the theater immediately when it ended tbh. With that said though, it truly embodies the spirit of a WIP, even as the final moments struggle to match the cohesion of the rest of the piece. Physicality was off the charts. ”

-Lauren W.

“The story was so easy to follow and I loved both of these characters!! Also, bravo for going ALL THE WAY with all of the wet shit AND bonus bravos for not getting any of the audience splashed! Relying on physicality instead of dialogue was such a treat. You could stick these two in any Western scenario and they'd have a blast.”

-V.

“Oh, wow.

I do love the world being built in this play. There’s a clear, charming vision, particularly with the makeup and costuming which are a highlight. Charm factor there is HIGH! Caroline can get away with anything. I enjoyed the pace of the story right up until the ending, which is a bit jarring and at odds with the themes already laid out by the characters in the story. In its current form, the ending feels more like a prank, and I’m curious to see how this develops into a conclusion that honors the audience’s time, the craft of the actors and the strength of the story itself.

The foundation of this work is strong and the performances from Patrick and Caroline are too good to miss."

“Two of the best performers in Denver, together?!! Hot DAWG. Truly, Asa Erlendson and Todd Sullivan individually are both just SO NATURALLY PRESENT. Having a conversation with either one of them is invigorating; it feels like the universe righted itself on this night to bring them together to play. And Bryan Richard Martin doing live music was the chef's kiss of perfect vibes. I hope that they had as much fun performing with each other, as the audience did watching them.”

Reviews

“A wildly inventive piece of physical comedy that turns absurdity into something playful, tender, and unexpectedly heartfelt.”

GULP! is a beautifully absurd physical comedy where an ordinary morning spirals into a full lifetime love story between Henry and… a banana. In just 30 minutes, Prith dances us through romance, marriage, family life, loss, and memory with playful commitment and surprising tenderness.

Prith’s performance is both silly and graceful. His movement has a balletic quality, and he uses the entire stage with creativity and joy. The props are simple but brilliantly imagined, transforming again and again in unexpected ways. His expressive eyes and physical storytelling carry the audience through every emotional turn, while the audience participation is light, welcoming, and perfectly balanced.

Beneath the absurdity is something quietly moving: a reminder that love and life are a little fragile, a little bruised, and wonderfully short. Henry dances us through it all with warmth and delight.

My one small hope for future versions would be slightly less time in the funeral slideshow and one more emotional Henry moment—perhaps a brief, bruised-hearted dance before the final beat. I want more Henry. I want a deeper emotional dip before the slip. I love this show it should by analyzed and taught in English and Theatre classes for years to come. Prith, keep it up, I am a fan.

A wildly imaginative piece that feels perfectly ripe with life and silliness.

10 leaping bananas out of 10. 🍌”

-TC M.

“GULP! Felt like classic Lecoq and/or Gaulier-style clown: A premise that was easy for the audience to follow, and lots of fun explorations and games within that premise. I loved the physicality, and Prith's acting was heartfelt and genuine. This show felt so relatable and was extremely clever with how everything was choreographed.”

-V.

“The eulogy wrecked me. I have a banana shaped hole in my heart now too.”

-NLB

“The originality of the show was impressive, the physical comedy, the timing and the facial expressions were spot on”

-SE

“Gulp was hilarious. Prith is just such a unique character and he really makes me crack up in a way unlike anything I’ve experienced.”

-JWB
